A research consortium has been organized to develop in Iran the technology for the conversion of Biomass into fuel ethanol.

The consortium includes Fars Engineering Research Center of ERI as the manager and technology developer, Biotechnology Institute of  IROST as the director of bench scale production, Computer Aided Process Engineering Research Center of IUST as the director of basic design, Mechanical Engineering Department of Sharif University of Technology as the director of detailed design engineering, School of Chemical, Gas and Oil Engineering of Shiraz University as the director of control engineering and School of New Technology and Energy Engineering of  Shahid Beheshti University as the director of enzyme production.

The final results of the project are the ability to develop some plants to replace 5 to 15 percent of gasoline consumption by ethanol in Iran. The fuel ethanol is a green fuel and does not change CO2 balance in the atmosphere.
